Sharpton Is The Man

I will admit that I had always underestimated Rev Al Sharpton, but this video has given me a newfound appreciation of this man. Tavis Smiley is still a great person but he definitely put his foot in his mouth and ended up with an additional one in his derriere.

7 inches by 4 inches, mason jar

Pictured above is the Thing in a Jar that’s usually sitting in my office at work.

The coolest thing about the Thing is that everyone responds to seeing it by asking questions. Where did I find it? Is it an internal organ? Is it some sort of fetus? Would it go well with pasta?

The Thing in a Jar is made out of Sculpey, acryllic paint and rubber cement. The liquid inside the jar is diluted Coke.

This is the third Thing in a Jar I’ve made. For some reason I’m always compelled to give them away as gifts.

Here’s a conceptual sketch I made of this Thing before I sculpted it.

1.5 by 2.5 inches, ballpoint pen

Usually when I make a Thing in a Jar, I try to keep the shape ambiguous enough so that the viewer cannot really pin down exactly what they’re looking at.

The glass jar acts as a physical barrier, preventing the viewer from directly accessing its contents. The murky fluid acts as a visual barrier, making the exact details of the form indistinct. The viewer is forced to fill in the gaps with their own imagination.

I think this is much cooler than, for example, a painting, which basically has this big implicit sign hanging off of it that says, “I am just a painting of an object, not the object itself. Obviously you are not looking at a real alien fetus.”

Viewers of The Thing in a Jar do not have this preconception. When they first see it, it is not entirely clear whether the Thing is real or not.

It’s fun to leave the Thing in a Jar in someone’s refrigerator and watch their reaction.

Update

I’ve gotten a lot of requests for instructions on how to make your own “thing,” so here you go.

First you’ll need some

Super Sculpy..…and

a jar. This one might be a little large, so get a smaller one if you can find it somewhere else. Also you’ll need some

Coca Cola.…and some

rubber cement.…

and lastly, someacryllic paint. I recommend some sort of creepy flesh tone, but choose whatever makes you happy or what you think would bother your friends the most.

OK here’s what you do. Make a funny shape out of the Sculpy. Make absolutely sure it will fit in the jar. A good start for the design would be to hunt around the web for some funny monster picture somebody else made, and then do something loosely inspired by that. If you feel that you have no artistic talent at all, just make a weird blob shape and claim that it’s an internal organ.

Follow the instructions on the Sculpy box about how to bake it in the oven.

After it cools, paint it with the acryllic paints however you want. A clever way to do this is to paint the whole thing with a light natural color like pink or something, and then when that dries, heavily dilute some black paint and use it to fill in all the creases, to make them stand out more. Then wipe any remaining black paint off the exterior surfaces.

Once the paint dries, brush a layer of rubber cement all over the thing. Let this dry. Repeat about three or four times, sometimes rubbing the rubber cement off in certain areas, to make it look like it’s skin that’s sortof rotting away.

After everything is dry, put the thing in your jar. Fill it 3/4 of the way with water, and try putting in a little Coke to darken it up so it’s not perfectly clear. Add some more water. The idea is you just want the water to look a little yellowish or dirty. Food coloring might work here too.

To make it easy to carry the jar around without it leaking everywhere, you could also glue the top permanently shut with epoxy, although this can be kinda tricky.

That’s it!

This picture has inspired me. You may like it or hate it, but it’s yours to keep for the entire period.

2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called, “life.”

3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial, error, and experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that ultimately “work.”

4. Lessons are repeated until they are learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can go on to the next lesson.

5. Learning lessons does not end. There’s no part of life that doesn’t contain its lessons. If you’re alive, that means there are still lessons to be learned.

6. “There” is no better a place than “here.” When your “there” has become a “here”, you will simply obtain another “there” that will again look better than “here.”

7. Other people are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.

8. What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

9. Your answers lie within you. The answers to life’s questions lie within you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.

10. You will forget all this.

2010 raised $7,838,054.36!!!!! WE ARE ... PENN STATE! FTK!

Hey there fiends. If you go to PSU then you know all about THON and all the good that comes from it. If you do not know about it then let me fill you in. THON is a dance marathon that was started in 1973 to combat childhood cancer. Organizations raise money throughout the year for the event and then dancers stand on their feet for 46 hours in an awe-inspiring show of enthusiasm and support for the cause. Every year there is a new PSU line dance that the dancers do at various times during the weekend. I must admit that the first time I experienced it as a freshmen, I couldn’t wrap my mind around it. THON is not like a fraternity or sorority but more like a weekend-long cult. It’s amazing to see a stadium full of college students with a Mason Family-like passion for good. I would love to expound upon it with greater details but maybe you just need to see it.

Archipod is attempting to reinvent your idea of an office by bringing it to your backyard. I have to say that this is one of the coolest things that I have seen in quite some time. Each garden office comes with an ergonomic semicircular computer desk, concealed background mood lighting, electric heater, smoke alarm, data ports and electrical outlets. These babies arent cheap but they are meant to suit people with “high standards rather than low budgets”. If you have an extra £12,000 laying around, by all means buy one. For more information click here. via

They sound even worse than the others.

Happy Birthday
112163
112196
11#9632
969363

Auld Lang Syne
11113212
321139#
#9331212
321##91

Frere Jacques
12311231
369369
9#9631,9#9631
191,191

Mary Had a Little Lamb
3212333
222,399
3212333
322321

Louie, Louie
111-66-999-66

Help
911
911
911
911

Time Lapse

I always wanted to take a really cool time lapse photo. I haven’t done it yet, but this photo has inspired me. I just need to find something cool to take a pic of here at Penn State. Any suggestions? Btw…the picture changes when you move your cursor over it.

Since the beginning of time humans have used birthdays to mark monumental occasions in our lives. Rather it was getting your first club as a 4 year old cave kid, your first lead painted toy full of small pieces as a child in the 30’s, your first car at 16 or fearing your 18th birthday because of the draft; birthdays have always marked new journeys in our lives. I have been awaiting my 21st birthday since the day after my 18th birthday. I realized that I was old enough to vote, go to a strip club, join the army and buy porn, but all the real fun begins at 21. I did not realize how much it sucks to be 20 until recently. I’ve been getting invited to a ton of events that are strictly 21 and over. I know that nothing that is 21+ really means 21+ but I’m always afraid that I’ll be that one unlucky guy that gets caught. I cant risk messing up my life right now. I have too much potential. So now, I’m counting down the days to March 10th. I’ll repeat that…I turn 21 on March 10th, just in case you want to send me a present or paypal me some extra money. 20 days and counting. Happy future b-day to me.

Simpson...As Told By Dr. Seuss

What’s up fiends? I don’t normally post stuff like this on the site, but I got a nice little chuckle out of it. I figured that you guys should too. Enjoy.

I did not kill my lovely wife.
I did not slash her with a knife.
I did not bonk her on the head.
I did not know that she was dead.
I stayed at home that fateful night.
I took a cab, then took a flight.
The bag I had was just for me.
My bag! My bag! Hey, leave it be.
When I came home I had a gash.
My hand was cut from broken glass.
I cut my hand on broken glass.
A broken glass did cause that gash.
I have nothing, nothing to hide.
My friend, he took me for a ride.
Did you take this person’s life?
Did you do it with a knife?
I did not do it with a knife.
I did not, could not kill my wife.
I did not do this awful crime.
I could not, would not anytime.
Did you hit her from above?
Did you drop this bloody glove?
I did not hit her from above.
I cannot even wear that glove.
I did not do it with a knife.
I did not, could not kill my wife.
I did not do this awful crime.
I could not, would not, not anytime.
And now I’m free, I can return
To my house for which I yearn.
And to my family whom I love.
Hey now I’m free — Give back my glove!!

What’s up fiends? I’ve got some music from a friend of mine named Leah Smith entitled “Dream World”. I’ve been blasting it for the last month or so and I figured that you guys should get a chance to hear some new emerging music as well.

Hey, what’s up fiends? I was browsing the web when I came across an article on Mediatakeout about the new Wale “Pretty Girls” video. They posted a video by Joy Daily bashing Wale about his latest project. She goes on and on about how she thinks that the video is wrong and how there were not enough black women in the video. She criticizes Wale for not casting enough girls who fit her ideas of “blackness”. Mediatakeout then went and backed her by captioning her video as “And here is a very insightful young lady who very eloquently expresses sentiments which we share.” So Mediatakeout, please enlighten us all since we know that you guys are the beacons of light which enlighten the black community and restructure our skewed paradigms, why is she right? The beat behind the song is not African as Ms Daily so inaccurately stated, its actually gogo inspired. The video had plenty of women that could immediately be recognized as African American, but that was never discussed. By agreeing with Ms Daily’s jaded opinions you in fact put yourselves out there as racist. Ms Daily made a statement about seeing girls in the video who are as dark as the rappers. So you are agreeing with her and saying that because Wale is dark skinned he now has a personal responsibility to go out and look for girls who are as dark as he is? In a very ironic twist of fate, it seems that you feel that all rappers must either look like T.I. or they now have to make sure that all the girls in their videos pass a equally discriminatory “reversed brown paper bag test”. Come on Joy/Mediatakeout…think before you speak.
